Day 45 - February 14, 2010

Working with glass.

First we clean the glass, and next trace our pattern piece onto the glass. Using a glass cutter, cut the lines of the pattern as traced, and break the excess glass using a special plier. The edges are smoothed using a glass grinder. Place the glass onto the mold into which it will be "slumped" to form a sushi dish.

Approximately 20 minutes and 1400 degrees later we have a sushi dish ready for use.
The last picture represents
"before" and "after".

Day 37 – February 6, 2010

Working with hot glass

Supplies used:

Paragon Quikfire ® Kiln
Various glass
Small mold
Teardrop mold
Shelf
Kiln shelf wash
Haik brush
Safety glasses

Comments:

This project requires an adult. While kids and teens can assemble the project, an adult must operate the kiln as it can reach temperatures of 2000°F. The manufacturer’s instructions for the kiln are to be followed.

We have some ideas for Christmas and are experimenting with slumping glass into molds. It will take several hours for the glass/molds to reach room temperature so we have something to look forward to in the morning.

This simple Easter card was created by first cutting out a rectangle from yellow cardstock. Next the cardstock was scored and folded in half. Using the Jolee stickers, we placed ""Happy Easter" on the outside of the card along with a few "egg" stickers.
